Helping your child transition from home to early learning
Starting in early learning is a big step for tamariki and whānau. Whether your child is joining a Home Based Educator or an early learning centre, this change brings new experiences, relationships, and routines.
Barnardos Early Learning supports tamariki from infancy through to school age. This means children may be starting their journey with us at very different stages of development, whether they are infants beginning to form secure attachments, toddlers discovering their growing independence, or young children preparing for school. While their needs evolve differently at each stage, the foundation remains the same: children learn best through warm, responsive relationships and meaningful connections, guided by Te Whāriki, Aotearoa New Zealand's early learning curriculum.
We understand that every child’s pathway is unique. With gentle preparation and strong trusting relationships, we work alongside you to help your child’s transition feel safe, positive, and well supported.
Things you can do at home to support the transition
4-6 weeks before starting
This is a good time to gently introduce the idea of early learning in a calm and positive way.
You might like to:
- Talk about your child’s new learning environment, whether it is a Home Based Educator’s home or an early learning centre
- Visit the space if possible or look at photos together
- Read stories about making friends, daily routines, and starting something new
- Introduce short, simple routines at home like sitting together for meals
- Encourage small tasks like helping to pack or unpack their bag or lunchbox
At this stage, the focus is on building familiarity and a sense of comfort rather than setting expectations.
2-4 weeks before starting
This is a great time to begin supporting your child’s growing independence in everyday routines.
You might like to:
- Practice opening lunchboxes, drink bottles, and food containers
- Encourage dressing skills such as putting on shoes, using zips, and managing simple clothing
- Build tidy-up routines after play
- Use gentle transitions between activities, such as timers or tidy-up songs
- Support your child to wash their hands independently
These experiences support the Te Whāriki strand of Contribution, where tamariki are encouraged to take increasing responsibility in their world. This will look different depending on their age and stage, from infants becoming familiar with routines and new caregivers, through to toddlers and young children building confidence and independence in everyday tasks.
1-2 weeks before starting
This stage is about supporting emotional readiness and helping your tamaiti feel safe and secure as things begin to change.
You might like to:
- Talk about what their days might look like, including drop off and settling in
- Practice short separations with plenty of reassurance and reconnection
- Name and talk about feelings such as excitement, nervousness, or uncertainty
- Support turn-taking and sharing in play
- Keep home routines calm and predictable
First days and beyond
Whether your tamaiti is attending a centre or a Home Based Educator, the early days are all about trust, connection, and consistency.
You might like to:
- Keep drop offs or transitions calm and reassuring
- Trust kaiako or your Home Based Educator to support your child once you leave
- Talk about their day and experiences in simple, positive ways
- Maintain familiar routines at home steady
- Allow time for your child to settle at their own pace
Adjustment looks different for every child and this is completely normal.
A connected learning journey
Whether your tamaiti is in a home based setting or a centre, their learning journey is guided by the same values: strong relationships, responsive care, and meaningful learning through everyday experiences.
At Barnardos Early Learning, we work alongside whānau to support each child to feel a strong sense of belonging. From those first early days with us – whether as an infant, toddler or young child, through to when they move on to their next place of learning we nurture each step of their journey with care and intention.
If you would like support as you prepare for your child’s transition to one of our early learning services, our Barnardos team is here to walk alongside you.
