A new space to grow at Hastings Early Learning

After five months away from the centre, there were plenty of excited faces as tamariki, whānau and kaiako stepped back into Hastings Early Learning Centre for the first time.

The transformation has been remarkable. Bright, welcoming spaces, thoughtfully designed learning areas and new resources have created an environment that supports curiosity, independence and learning through play. But more importantly, it has created a space that truly feels like home.

From the spacious over 2s room to the beautifully refreshed under 2s environment, every part of the centre has been designed with tamariki in mind. Children can now access more of their own resources, follow their interests and engage in richer, more complex play experiences throughout the day.

For Centre Manager Di, one of the most rewarding changes has been seeing tamariki confidently choose materials and create their own learning experiences. "We have noticed more complex construction as tamariki can access supporting materials themselves to add depth and interest to their work," she shared.

The refurbishment has also strengthened the centre's sense of identity. A striking wood panel feature wall displaying Barnardos values and the centre's whakataukī creates a warm and welcoming entrance, with many describing the space as feeling like walking into a marae.

While the new spaces look beautiful, it is the children's response that has meant the most. One tamaiti summed it up perfectly when they walked into the newly renovated bathroom and proudly declared, "I love my new school, it's so beautiful."

For the Hastings team, that's what this journey has always been aboutcreating a place where tamariki feel inspired to learn, explore and belong for many years to come.
